The weak two bid is a useful form of preemptive opening bid.
Keep in mind, we don’t plan on making a preemptive bid — PREEMPTIVE BIDS are USED to prevent the opponents from having an easy auction when you don’t have opening points.
Preemptive bids are nuisance bids!
AN OPENING TWO CLUB BID IS ALWAYS SHOWING A STRONG HAND —22+ POINTS —IF YOU HAVE A GOOD SIX CARD CLUB SUIT PREEMPT AT THE 3 LEVEL OR IF VULNERABLE JUST PASS.
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO OPEN A WEAK TWO?
5-11 HIGH CARD POINTS
A GOOD 6 CARD SUIT
WHAT QUALIFIES AS A “GOOD” SIX CARD SUIT:
TWO OF THE TOP THREE HONOURS –
THREE OF THE TOP FIVE HONOURS
RESPONSES TO A WEAK-TWO BID
***A raise of opener’s suit is to play – Opener must pass
***A jump to 3 no trump is to play – Opener must pass.
***A response in a new suit below game level is FORCING FOR ONE ROUND AND SHOWS A 5 CARD SUIT —OPENER RESPONDS AS FOLLOWS:
—WITH 3 CARD SUPPORT, OR DOUBLETON HONOR, OPENER RAISES RESPONDER’S SUIT
—WITH NO FIT, OPENER REBIDS ORIGINAL SUIT WITH A MINIMUM (5-8 POINTS) AND
—BIDS A NEW SUIT OR NO TRUMP WITH A MAXIMUM (9-11 POINTS)
***A response of 2NT is artificial and used as a FORCING BID, showing game interest and asking this question: Opener do you have a weak hand ? (5-8 points) —if so rebid your original suit at the three level.
***With a MAXIMUM WEAK TWO (9-11 POINTS), opener bids another suit to show a FEATURE – USUALLY AND ACE OR KING IN THAT SUIT —with no outside feature, opener rebids 3 no trump to show a MAXIMUM HAND.
