A FUN REFRESHER ON
LEADS VS NO TRUMP CONTRACTS
Now that we are all enjoying “virtual bridge” thought you might like a refresher.
Here are some guidelines for LEADING WHEN THE OPPONENTS HAVE LANDED IN A NO TRUMP CONTRACT – keeping in mind when you lead a card your partner works with you to defeat the contract — the leads that follow give your partner “insider knowledge”. THE GOAL against defeating no trump contracts is for you and partner to work together to set up the longest suit between your two hands.
FIRST CHOICE TO LEAD>
IF YOU HAVE ANY OF THE THREE SEQUENCES SHOWN BELOW here are a few ways to play the cards to get the best result while working with your partner😀
A SEQUENCE CONSISTS OF 3 HIGH CARDS THAT “TOUCH” VS NO TRUMP CONTRACTS
THREE HIGH RANKING CARDS THAT TOUCH & small cards
K Q J X X (THE “X” STANDS FOR “Small CARD”)
Q J 10 X X
J 10 9 X X
Always LEAD THE “TOP CARD” IN THE SEQUENCE — if you lead the King partner knows you have the queen and jack —-you do not have the ACE! If partner has the ACE and a small card , he will overtake your king with the ace (to unblock your suit) and lead back the small card – now you can play your Queen , and jack any any small cards in the suit !
Q J 9 X X
MISSING THE “10” –
A BROKEN SEQUENCE
– TWO HIGH CARDS THAT TOUCH AND A “BREAK” BEFORE THE NEXT HIGH RANKING CARD! TREAT AS A 3 CARD SEQUENCE AND LEAD THE QUEEN (Q)—the goal is not to let the Declarer win a trick too cheaply!!! WHILE GIVING PARTNER INFO ON WHAT YOU HOLD WHICH WILL ENABLE YOU TO WORK TOGETHER TO DEFEAT THE CONTRACT.😄
K J 10 X X
AN INTERIOR SEQUENCE –
– A SEQUENCE OF TWO OR MORE CARDS that touch WITH A HIGH RANKING CARD IN THE SUIT!
LEAD THE TOP OF THE “TOUCHING HIGH CARDS” – THE JACK! Now partner knows you hold the 10 which is also an honour card.
IF PARTNER BID A SUIT DURING THE AUCTION – he has points and a suit so unless you have a sure suit you can run, Lead partner’s suit…….
LEAD 4TH DOWN FROM YOUR LONGEST AND STRONGEST
K 10 8 7 4
LEAD THE “7”
The main take-a-way is to work together and even though Declarer May have two winners in your partner’s suit – if you win a trick , LEAD PARTNER’S SUIT until Declarer’s winners are gone —-then small cards in partner’s hand will take tricks if he gets in to play them.
Just remember “if partner leads a small card vs no trump – he is leading 4th from longest and strongest — help partner set up his small suit BY RETURNING PARTNER’S lead.
The leads are different when you and partner defend against opponent’s suit contract! That’s another lesson.
